Our Company

Established in 1998, Motorpoint is the UK’s leading car supermarket, delivering happiness to UK customers who had historically paid more for their new and nearly new cars than almost anywhere else in Europe.

From the outset, Motorpoint has been redressing that balance, creating a simple and straightforward transparent pricing policy. Our buying power enables us to bulk purchase a wide selection of cars from suppliers across the UK and Europe at competitive prices – meaning we pass those savings directly onto our customers.

Motorpoint was founded by Managing Director, David Shelton (as well as former Managing Director, Gary Warren), who has a wealth of car buying skill and expertise, growing the business significantly since its inception. In 2010, Motorpoint’s annual turnover was £315m and the company now employs over 300 colleagues.

The company has sold over 400,000 cars since it began and now sells a car every four minutes. Motorpoint’s unique approach to selling cars has saved its customers over £90 million on prices charged by franchised dealers. This equates to a saving of around £5,000 on every car sold – quite a significant amount for families to save.

Motorpoint is the only car supermarket to have sold a car to every postcode in the UK – quite an achievement considering it currently has five UK sites in Derby (where its Head Office is based), Burnley, Glasgow, Newport and Peterborough.

Motorpoint Arenas

In August 2010, Motorpoint acquired the naming rights to the arena in Sheffield in a five year deal and then in 2011, with the arena in Cardiff. Both venues are branded as Motorpoint Arena and Motorpoint’s logo appears on all concert tickets, concert advertising, show leaflets, posters and venue websites.

Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield has a capacity of 13,000 and opened in 1991. The Arena is operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) and managed by Live Nation, the largest live music company in the world.

Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena is a 7,500 capacity venue and opened in 1993. It is also managed by Live Nation.

The naming rights to these two superior venues provide Motorpoint with a considerable branding opportunity, providing awareness of the brand to a whole new audience.

Kip Kniveton

Kip has had an interesting time at Motorpoint; after selling his own butchers business in the 90s he decided to retire for a bit. Kip soon got bored and had a chat with Paul Winfield (Motorpoint Director) for a job at the new business he had set up called Motorpoint.

Since then (1998) Kip has worked on the sales floor, in commercial van sales and recently returned to the world of selling cars to our online customers over the phone. He even sold a van to a customer in New Zealand this year!

Everyone starts with a 3 day induction where they are welcomed to Motorpoint and go away understanding what our core values and our business are all about.  Sales People get to stay on for a further 2 weeks to gain all the skills and knowledge they need to hit the sales floor running.

Don’t just take our word for it, hear it from some of our team members who have benefitted from our service.

Paul Carroll

Workshop Manager – Glasgow

“The most useful thing I have learnt is how to listen better to my team members and give feedback.  I have improved my ability to communicate with my team, particularly motivating them when we are under pressure.

I have enjoyed the chance to have a look at myself and see the effect I have on my team.  The training has helped my confidence and management skill, as I no longer take things personally when things are not going right and putting myself down.

Motorpoints management development programme will help my career development and it gives the tolls and support to get you up the ladder”.

Amanda Scott

Office Manager – Burnley

I have learnt how to communicate effectively and motivate my team, I now stop what I am doing to listen to people and re-iterate key points back to them.  I also give praise to provide more encouragement on jobs well done.

I enjoyed meeting other managers, especially the ones who have been promoted from within Motorpoint and to share their experiences.  As a result of my training my confidence has improved by knowing how to approach different people.  It has also helped to know that I am not the only manager who is unsure from time to time!  My management skills have improved as I have learnt how to be assertive and to stand back and listen to problems.

I think the training gives a brilliant base to expand your knowledge and shows how you can improve skills you may already have.

Richard Chard

General Manager – Peterborough

“The most useful thing I have learnt is that knowledge is something to embrace and not be scared of.  Preparation, I have found is the key to getting the most out of the training and then how you then go about your role in the business afterwards.

The increase in my confidence has enabled me to become a stronger manager particularly for my management team.  The training has enabled me to be more open and approachable so we can discuss issues and resolve them at site level quickly and efficiently .As a result of the training I listen more to my team members and spend quality time with my managers, I spend a lot of time carrying out reviews and this gives me a fantastic chance to share ideas and learn more about all my team members .  I am more organised and plan things more efficiently.

Being given the chance to learn and develop skills in new areas is very enjoyable.  Listening to the other General Managers and taking board their different ideas and seeing e everyone having a fresh look at their roles and jobs is very interesting and useful.  I now feel even more supported in my role as a result of the training I receive and this has also increased my confidence.   The support I have received and my learning has helped me know that if there is something I can’t do at first I am now able to adapt to many situations.  The improvements the training have made in me can only be a good thing for me and the company.  It will help me take the next step forward and make Peterborough a successful efficient site.  It has helped me communicate with more senior mangers as well as with team members on the floor. I have learnt that it is crucial to ‘walk the talk’ and lead by example. Never to accept second best and try to be the best.

Mark Watkins

Sales Manager – Newport

“Learning more about yourself as an individual, knowing  my own strengths and weaknesses has been very useful.  Also how you manage your team and understanding the impact you have with the guidance you give and decision making on a day to day basis.  As a result of the training I listen more to the team member’s thoughts and views as a whole and give them the chance to think for themselves.   By encouraging people  to engage in taking responsibility  they feel more involved and valued as an individual;  this improves team members confidence in future decision making and helps them feel more challenged. I have enjoyed putting into practice what I have learnt and seeing the benefits.

My confidence has developed by having a bigger understanding of my team members thought process and my management skills have improved by being able to explain why and what impact decisions have on the business and the outcomes of these decisions.

The training I have received has given me a wider outlook to evaluate decisions and the impact they can have simply by choosing my mood.  I feel as a manager your team is a true reflection of yourself and with a family feeling achieved that shows trust and support a consistent strong and happy team will be maintained.

Russell Louth

General Manager – Newport

“I have learned a lot about myself and how I need to adapt to different situations and different people, I have learned the art of listening and communicating better with my team.  I am now a lot more organised and planned, I set mini goals and achieve them.  I really enjoyed the Art of Brilliance programme and realising you have a choice about how you behave and your attitude.

The training has re-empowered me to take my site and run it, I know with the help of my management team and communication anything can be achieved.  The training has benefited both myself and Motorpoint massively, if you can focus on the things in your control and manage them, then the things out of your control shouldn’t bother you”.

Liz Kelly

Office Manager – Peterborough

The most important thing I have learnt is how to turn negative attitudes and performances round and create effective happy team members who enjoy their work. Also to encourage team members to create ideas that could improve the day to day running of the office and develop them.

As a result of the training I listen and get more involved, giving everyone the opportunity to discuss  any issues that can get addressed more effectively and efficiently.  I recognise more when team members may need a bit more training in a certain areas.

It was great to get everyone talking round a table and to listen to how they approach different situations that may arise.  By doing so we gave each other ideas.

You definitely come back from the training with more confidence and feeling positive that you can achieve your goals and plans for the future. My management skills have developed; I have done a lot more coaching  and made a stronger more motivated team from it.  They are now always willing to grow their knowledge of other jobs and therefore have more appreciation of each others workload.

I feel a stronger person and more confident to move forward knowing there is a great support network at Motorpoint.  The company will always offer further training to develop your knowledge and this will lead to more responsibilities in the future.
